August 07 Chad Wellmon '99 wins Best Article of the Year
Former German student and Resident Director in Würzburg, Chad Wellmon '99 (University of Virginia), just got word that his article “Poesie as Anthropology: Schleiermacher, Colonial History, and the Ethics of Ethnography,” German Quarterly 79 (2006): 423–42, won the Max Kade Award for the best article of the year in German Quarterly for 2006.
August 01 Day 352 in Germany
Today is my 352nd day abroad as a participant of Davidson’s study abroad program in Würzburg, Germany. Last year on July 28 as I waited to board the plane in the Charlotte airport, I expected that this year would be a good one, but I never expected that the time would go by so quickly.

The Bremer German Language Award, named in honor of C.Christopher Bremer, M.D., class of 1960, is awarded this year to James Christian McCain.
April 19 Rachel Heidmann '08 selected for Graduate School Experience
Like Ted Dawson '06 before her, Rachel Heidmann '08 has been selected to participate in a weeklong summer seminar for undergraduate seniors majoring in German.
March 29 Jennifer Bienert to enter Ph.D. program at Chapel Hill
Jennifer Bienert will return to North Carolina in fall 2007 to begin her Ph.D. studies in German at UNC Chapel Hill.
March 29 Patrick Walsh '06 goes to Columbia
After graduating magna cum laude from Davidson, spending a year at the University of Tübingen, and weighing offers from several prestigious schools, former JYA student and German minor Patrick Walsh '06 has decided to pursue his Ph.D. in German Studies at Columbia University.
March 29 Lee Ballard '07 wins Fulbright Teaching Asisstantship
Kudos to Lee Ballard '07 for winning a Fulbright Teaching Assistantship Award. Lee, a music major who spent his junior year in Würzburg, will be teaching in Germany in 2007-08.
March 29 Chad Wellmon '99 takes job at UVA
Congratulations! After earning his Ph.D. at the University of California at Berkeley, serving as Davidson's Resident Director in Würzburg, and teaching at Georgetown University, Chad Wellmon '99 has accepted a tenure-track offer from the University of Virginia.

Congratulations to Drs. Denham and McCulloh whose co-edited volume W. G. Sebald: History - Memory - Trauma recently appeared in the series Interdisciplinary German Cultural Studies of prestigious German publisher Walther de Gruyter.
