Summer Research Program

Undergraduates who experience the excitement of discovery develop into innovative thinkers and problem solvers. In an effort to foster an environment conducive to such discovery, The HHMI grant provides for eight HHMI Summer Research Fellows annually who may pursue research in biology and psychology. Over the 10 weeks of summer research, the Fellows will perform laboratory research; have weekly lunch meetings with presentations by faculty and research fellows, as well as activities with concurrent DRI and Merck/AAAS research program researchers. These fellows receive:

  • $4,000 stipend for 10 weeks
  • $1,000 housing allowance
  • $500 for travel to scientific conferences and meetings

How To Apply

The Summer Research Fellows are chosen from a variety of criteria. Members of underrepresented groups in the sciences are encouraged to apply. Only undergraduates are eligible for the program. Graduate students are not eligible. Selection criteria include:

  • Academic qualifications
  • Interest in the field of study
  • Faculty recommendations

Successful applicants will be notified by the end of February. Dr. Barbara Lom will administer the summer research program. Each winter an announcement listing faculty mentors and descriptions of research opportunities will be distributed to potential student applicants.

Accomplishments of Previous Summer Research Fellows

Since 1996, five neuroscience students, two of whom were HHMI Summer Research Fellows, won Barry Goldwater Science Scholarships. Eight biology students competed successfully for coveted NSF Graduate Fellowships. Three of the eight NSF-GRF awardees were former HHMI Summer Research Fellows. More information can be found in Program Accomplishments.
