Chartier tenured; Davis governor; Swallow faculty leaderApril 13, 2009 It is a big spring for Davidson mathematics faculty members as they have been awarded or elected to positions in which they will serve Davidson or the MAA, the Mathematical Association of America, for many years. Congratulations to Tim Chartier who received tenure from the Davidson College Board of Trustees at their meeting on April 3, 2009. He was also promoted to Associate Professor effective August 1, 2009. This was not a surprise to anyone familiar with Dr. Chartier's outstanding record including awards from the Sloan Foundation for his research and from the MAA for his teaching. Still, everyone is thrilled that Dr. Chartier plans to be at Davidson for a long, long time. Congratulations to Stephen Davis who was elected as a Governor of the MAA for 2009-2012. Governors are like a national board of directors where Dr. Davis will represent our five-state Southeastern Section. He was previously both Chair and Secretary-Treasurer of the Southeastern Section and has won its distinguished service award. Ben Klein has also previously served as Governor. Congratulations to John Swallow who was elected Vice Chair Pro Tem of the Faculty for a three year term 2009-2012. This rather understated title is actually the highest faculty office and represents the entire Davidson faculty. Dr. Swallow has already been a major faculty leader in recent years, serving on the Executive Committee and playing a large role in strategic planning in academics, most recently as Chair of the Committee for Curriculum Development.
