Alumni eNews - January 2009

Dear Davidsonian,

Happy New Year… plus a couple of weeks! Time seems to be flying by here at America’s Most Fantastic College, and graduation for the Class of 2009 and March Madness are right around the corner. The Alumni Relations staff has had the honor of traveling to alumni events all around the Southeast recently, and it’s been great to meet with so many of you in your hometowns. Please do your best to attend the next gathering in your area!

This time around I’m going to get right to the news, but please remember that we’re thinking about how to better serve you in everything we do. Please be in touch and let us know how we can help connect you to Davidson, and to each other. Now… here are some things you should know.

Are You Following the Men’s Basketball Team?
Yeah, I know. What kind of question is that. We’re doing all we can to keep up with demand and interest around the team, and have created some efficiencies to assist us in that regard. So, once again:

  • Review the updated television schedule for the team and put those dates on your calendar today.
  • Take a look at your local chapter page to find out where in your town you should go to watch the game with other Davidsonians (keeping in mind that MASN might not be available in all areas).
  • If you’re thinking about attending an away game, take a look at what’s happening in those conference towns before the games.
  • And if you’re headed to Chattanooga for the SoCon Tournament from March 5-9, be sure not to miss the Davidson fan headquarters and the hotel blocks available for alumni at discounted rates.
Alumni Summer College 2009
Led by Professor of History Jonathan Berkey, Alumni Summer College will again offer a topical and timely focus for three days of study and discussion. Converging Cultures: Exploring the Crossroads of Religion and History in the Middle East will be an experience you won’t want to miss. Put June 3-7 on your calendar today, and keep your eyes open for more information coming soon.

Alumni Travel Opportunities in 2009
Davidson’s alumni travel program is gearing up for another great year in 2009 – and we want you to come along! This year’s trips will be to:

For more information about these great trips, please contact Eleanor Cross ’01 in the Alumni Office today! NOW is the time to register!

Calling all High School Scholars!
July Experience will conduct its 34th summer residential program for rising juniors and seniors in high school from July 5-25, 2009.  If you are aware of academically motivated young people who are ready for a taste of college, encourage them to consider July Experience.  Courses are taught by Davidson faculty and students will enjoy a broad range of recreational and co-curricular experiences.  You can get more information here or by calling Pat McCue at 704-894-2508.

What Better Time to Learn?!
For nearly ten years, the Davidson Financial Investment Association (DIFA) has been helping manage a portion of Davidson’s endowment. It’s been a great learning experience for the real world, and the group has perhaps never been stronger than it is today.

Art Exhibit Explores an Interesting Intersection
On display through February 27, RE/FORMATIONS: Disability, Women, and Sculpture provides a thought-provoking look into what it means to be a disabled female artist. If you’re in the area in the coming month, please stop by the Katherine and Tom Belk Visual Arts Center to see the show.

Davidson Men Still Streaking
No, not like THAT. The men’s basketball team ran its conference record to 10-0 at Chattanooga on Wednesday night, and is inching closer to breaking the Southern Conference consecutive wins record. Perhaps you heard about some of the highlights of that Chattanooga game? PLEASE TAKE NOTE of the television and radio broadcast schedule for the remainder of the year. And remember that the women’s team will have its Saturday, February 7 game vs. Elon broadcast on SportSouth, at 2:00!

Your Alma Mater. Love It. Live It. Attend Events in Your Area!
Do the right thing for Davidson – don’t miss out on alumni chapter events in your hometown! Please bookmark the Web page for the alumni chapter near you, and check back regularly. We’ll keep it updated with events and other news that’s coming your way, including information about the locations you should meet up with other Davidson folks to watch basketball telecasts. Keep your eyes open, and bring your Davidson roommates or friends with you!

Changes to Alumni Relations Mailings
Partly in response to difficult economic times, and largely in response to Davidson’s Year of Sustainability, the Alumni Office will be changing the way it sends notices about chapter events around the country and around the world. Starting now, invitations to chapter events will be emailed (instead of paper mailed) to the 25 most recent graduating classes. Classes more than 26 years out, and all those who don’t have email addresses, will continue to receive paper mailings. Please let us know if this new plan could create troubles for you. Thank you for supporting our efforts to conserve!

The Careers Office – AND DAVIDSON STUDENTS – Need Your Help
Can you help with finding jobs for Davidson graduates and young alumni? In their password protected system, the Careers Office electronically posts opportunities ranging from entry-level up to five years experience.  If you know of opportunities within your company and would like to collect resumes or can give Career Services the contact person with your company, please contact Brenda Harvey. Visit the Career Service employer page for other ways your employer can be recruiting Davidson students and young graduates.
