Alumni eNews - December 2008

Dear Davidsonian,

At this very special time of year, I urge you to take a moment or two, sit back, and count your blessings – because they are many. When I reflect upon this notion, I think of my three beautiful and healthy boys, and the joy they bring to my life each and every day. I think about the woman from my little hometown in Maine who married me just sixteen short years after I first developed a crush on her. I think much about how lucky I am for my family and friends, who have all supported me during my life. And I surely think about my good fortune to hold perhaps the greatest job on earth at the greatest institution in America. I am thankful for all of you, my Davidson brothers and sisters (and other extended family…), and it is an honor to serve you and to represent Davidson College. I often marvel at how lucky I am to be here, and to work with and for all of you each day I come to the office. I wish you all a happy, restful, and peaceful holiday season, and hope you’re able to share it with the ones you love.

Here at Davidson, pride-inducing and other good news continues to roll in.

In the spirit of giving, how about Andrew Lovedale ’09 and his extraordinary efforts to get shoes and athletic equipment to kids in his native Nigeria?

In the spirit of scholarship, how about Katy Finley ’09 winning a prestigious Marshall Scholarship to do research on gender dynamics in the Middle East?

In the spirit of service, how about the Bonner Grants awarded to Davidson students so that they can initiate meaningful projects in and around Davidson?

You just have to love this sort of stuff. These stories about Davidson students are mentioned in the eNews because they happen to have news releases written about them. But they’re just the beginning of the stories here; they’re simply indicative of the diverse interests and accomplishments of a truly amazing group of 1,700 students. Be sure to count that one blessing that we all have in common: Davidson College. Now, here’s the rest of the news from this high-powered little college of ours…

Changes to Alumni Relations Mailings
Partly in response to difficult economic times, and largely in response to Davidson’s Year of Sustainability, the Alumni Office will be changing the way it sends notices about chapter events around the country and around the world. Starting January 1, 2009, invitations to chapter events will be emailed (instead of paper mailed) to the 25 most recent graduating classes. Classes more than 26 years out, and all those who don’t have email addresses, will continue to receive paper mailings. Please let us know if this new plan could create troubles for you. Thank you for supporting our efforts to conserve!
