Davidson College Freedom Schools will celebrate its 2008 Finale at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 29, 2008, in the Duke Family Performance Hall on the college campus. The Finale is an opportunity to share with families, friends, and community all that our scholars have been learning this summer. Subjects have ranged from African-American History to U.S. health care policies and financial literacy. The Children’s Defense Fund’s Freedom Schools program is “an educational and cultural enrichment program that provides summer options for children where there are none and strengthens parent and community involvement in the year-round achievement of children.” Freedom Schools at Davidson College serves a limited number of children in primary and secondary grades. The program integrates reading, conflict resolution, and social action in an activity-based curriculum that promotes social, cultural, and historical awareness. Davidson College students primarily serve as servant leader interns for the program at two community sites.
