Robinson Wins NIH Research Grant

July 27, 2009

Psychology graduate, Mercedes Robinson, in collaboration with Dr. Julio Ramirez, was awarded an $80,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) early in her senior year at Davidson. The award provided support for Ms. Robinson during her senior year at Davidson College as well as for an additional post-baccalaureate year after graduation. Ms. Robinson is involved in the research being conducted in Professor Ramirez’ laboratory. She worked on independent research which served as the basis for her senior thesis while being thoroughly trained in histological techniques for the analysis of brain tissue. In addition to the scientific work, Ms. Robinson will be mentored throughout the duration of her grant period by Professor Ramirez in preparing materials for public presentations as well as ethics in conducting  scientific research. Currently in her post-baccalaureate year, Ms. Robinson is focusing her attention on conducting research to enhance her preparation and competitiveness for entering medical school. Her ultimate goal is to conduct mental health research with a focus on health disparities in diagnosis and treatment among minority populations.
