Featuring Professors Russell Crandall and Ralph Levering, this year’s Alumni Summer College will examine insurgencies and counter-insurgencies spanning more than 200 years of history—from the American Revolution through the present-day conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Readings, films, lectures and discussions will help frame these and other insurrections in their proper historical context.Schedule | Wednesday, June 11 Check in at the newly renovated Duke Residence Hall before enjoying an opening reception and dinner with other participants. Finish the evening with a film screening and discussion group.
Thursday, June 12 After breakfast, dive into classroom sessions with Professor Crandall. Day One topics include the American Revolution, the Philippines, the “Banana Wars” in Latin America and Asia and the rise of Maoist insurgencies around the world. Thursday’s schedule includes an excursion to the Kings Mountain National Military Park. Our day ends with a reception, dinner and film screening with faculty.
Friday, June 13 Day Two topics include Vietnam and El Salvador. Today you’ll hear from Professor Levering, whose specialties include Vietnam and the Cold War era. Before dinner, take a fun and leisurely tour of Davidson’s historic campus with Leland Park ’63, Library Director Emeritus. Cap the evening with a special “College Bowl” competition with other participants.
Saturday, June 14 Complete your week with compelling discussions focusing on contemporary insurgencies such as Colombia, Afghanistan and Iraq. A farewell banquet will be followed by a “late night” gathering.
Sunday, June 15 Gather together and say goodbye at a closing brunch before noon check out. Safe travels! |

Your Instructors Russell Crandall received his B.A. from Bowdoin College and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Johns Hopkins University. An associate professor of political science at Davidson, Crandall has held the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur professorship and received the college’s outstanding teaching award. He teaches courses on American foreign policy, Latin American politics, international political economy and other topics.
In 2004–05, Crandall served as the director for the Western Hemisphere at the National Security Council and as special assistant for counter-terrorism at the Joint Chiefs of Staff. From 2002to 2004, he served as an advisor for Latin American security to the assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs. He has also worked as a human rights official with Catholic Relief Services in Colombia and has been a consultant for the World Bank, Andean Development Bank and the United Nations. He is a term member at the Council on Foreign Relations and foreign policy advisor to Senator Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. Crandall is the author or editor of five books, including Gunboat Democracy: U.S. Interventions in the Dominican Republic, Grenada, and Panama. A second edition of his book Driven by Drugs: U.S. Policy Toward Colombia will be published in July 2008. His upcoming book, The United States and Latin America After the Cold War, will be published this summer. He is currently writing a book tentatively titled Dirty War: The United States in El Salvador in the 1980s. Ralph Levering Since 1986 Ralph Levering has taught courses at Davidson in modern American history, especially in U.S. foreign policy. In recent years his most popular course has focused on the Vietnam War. In 2006 he was named the Vail Professor of History and received the Hunter-Hamilton Love of Teaching Award. After growing up on an orchard near Mount Airy, N.C., Levering received his B.A. from UNC Chapel Hill and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Princeton. He is the author or coauthor of eight books, including The Public and American Foreign Policy, 1918–1978 (1978); The Kennedy Crises: The Press, the Presidency, and Foreign Policy (1983); and The Cold War: A Post-Cold War History (2nd ed., 2005). In his spare time, Levering enjoys traveling, hiking and supporting his two favorite basketball teams, the Tar Heels and the Wildcats.
