Graduate Awards and Departmental Recognition

The college recognized seniors receiving graduate fellowships and other students and recent alumni entering graduate programs with distinction.

National and International Fellowships and Scholarships:

Phillip Compeau ‘08 has received the Thomas W. Smith Scholarship from Davidson College for a year of study toward the Certificate of Advanced Study in Pure Mathematics at Cambridge University.

Erika Weiberg ‘08 has received the Pearson Scholarship from the American Philological Association to support a year of study toward an M.Phil. in Greek and Latin language and literature at Cambridge University.

Brenna Burns ‘08 has received the NCAA Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship to support postgraduate study in psychology. The Byers scholarship is the NCAA’s highest academic award.

Hannah Rogers-Ganter ‘08 received a Fulbright Full Grant for a year of study at the Environmental Policy Research Centre at the Free University of Berlin. Hannah also received a DAAD/German Academic Exchange Service grant for her research and study next year in Berlin.

Rachel Heidmann ’08 received a Fulbright Full Grant for a year of study at the European Forum for Migration Studies and the Sociology Department at the University of Bamberg, Germany.

Valerie Mason ’07 has been awarded a Fulbright Teaching Assistantship by the Austrian Fulbright Commission.

Richmond Blake ‘09 has received a Truman Scholarship. The Truman Scholarship supports highly qualified college juniors committed to pursuing careers in government, the nonprofit or advocacy sectors, education, or other public service.

Sarah Rhodes ‘09 has received a Goldwater Scholarship. The Goldwater Scholarship supports scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to highly qualified college juniors who intend to pursue careers in these fields.

Scholarships from specific graduate programs and institutions:

Halley Aelion ‘08 has received a scholarship for the Master of Arts in German and European Studies program in the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service.

Jarrod Blue ’08 has been awarded from University of Tennessee at Knoxville a Graduate Assistantship in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and from Dartmouth University a Graduate Assistantship in Biology.

Colin Brown ’07 has received a full scholarship to the philosophy Ph.D. program at Stanford. He also had numerous other scholarship offers from other institutions.

Nicholas DiLuzio ’08 has been awarded a scholarship from Duke University for the Masters in Environmental Management and Masters in Forestry programs there.

Emma Garren ’08 has received a graduate fellowship to the neuroscience program at the University of California, San Diego.

Alex Greer ’08 has been awarded a graduate fellowship in biomedical sciences from the University of California, San Francisco.

Albert J. Hergenroeder ‘08 has received a scholarship from University of Maryland for the Ph.D. program in Applied Mathematics and Scientific Computing.

Dominic Ippolito ’08 was awarded a Duke University graduate fellowship in neurobiology. Andrew Johnson ’08 has been awarded a graduate fellowship in immunology at Duke University.

Heather Lohneiss ‘07 has received an award to study at Wake Forest University, Master of Science in Accounting.

Elizabeth Miller ‘06 has received a full scholarship from the philosophy Ph.D. program at Harvard University.

Margaret Niemiec ’08 has received an award to study at Vanderbilt University, Master of Accountancy.

Daniel D. Orr ‘08 has been awarded scholarships for the Ph.D. program in mathematics at UNC Chapel Hill.

Evangeline Pittman ‘08 has received a scholarship from the Duke University Law School. Shannon Pittman ’08 has received a full scholarship from the University of Missouri to study biology. She received several other fellowship offers as well.

Adam Topaz ‘08 has received a scholarship from University of Pennsylvania for the Ph.D. program in mathematics.

Rebecca Trask ’08 has received an award to study at Wake Forest University, Master of Science in Accounting.

Erika Weiberg ’08 has been awarded The Pearson Fellowship for a year of study in Classics in the U.K. and a 5-year graduate fellowship in classics at UNC Chapel Hill.

Ministry Fellows Program:
Through a nomination, application, and interview process, the Lilly Programs for the Theological Exploration for Vocation and the Preministerial Committee select rising seniors each year to participate in the Ministry Fellows Program, previously called the Lilly Scholarship Program. In an era when fewer and fewer young people are considering ministry as a vocation, this program identifies students who have gifts for ministry and encourages them to explore ministry as a vocation into which God might be calling them. The program consists of a summer internship in a congregational setting and a year-long discernment process led by Tim Beach-Verhey, the Director of the Lilly Programs for the Theological Exploration of Vocation.

The Ministry Fellows for 2008-09 are: Cameron Scott Barr, Carolyn Susan Klaasen, Mary Elizabeth Mebane, Kathryn Elizabeth Ruark, and Brett Alan Shore.
