Leadership, Service, Athletic, and General AwardsDAVIDSON BLACK ALUMNI NETWORK AWARD Jessica Alanna Givens ‘10 Ebony Monique Harley ‘09 The Davidson Black Alumni Network (DBAN) was formed in 1988 to enrich the communication and involvement of black alumni with current students and the college. Much of DBAN’s work is focused on enhancing the quality of life of African-American students at Davidson. Yearly DBAN honors African-American students in good academic standing who have demonstrated distinguished service to the community in the form of the Davidson Black Alumni Network Scholarship Award. The first recipient, a freshman from Macon, Mississippi, is a Presidential Scholar and a Leadership Fellow in the Chidsey Leadership Program. She is also a member of the Black Student Coalition and a Representative on the Activities Tax Council. The first recipient of the Davidson Black Alumni Network Award is Kiara Ree Boone. The second recipient, a sophomore from Harlem, New York, is a Presidential Scholar and a William Holt Terry Fellow. This student is very involved in SGA, serving as the Sophomore Class President and the Student Government Representative on the Activities Tax Council. She is also the Immediate Past Social Chair of the Black Student Coalition and a STRIDE Mentor. The second recipient of the Davidson Black Alumni Network Award is Jessica Alanna Givens. The third and final recipient, a junior from Baltimore, Maryland, is an economics major and a Bonner Scholar. This student is the newly-elected president of the Black Student Coalition. She is also a volunteer at the Ada Jenkins Center After School Program, a STRIDE Mentor, and a participant in Leadership Davidson. The third recipient of the Davidson Black Alumni Network Award is Ebony Monique Harley. RAWLEY P. TURNER DRAMA AWARD The recipients are: Desirée Domo for her captivating performance of a commedia del-arte character, Sylvestre, in Molière’s Scapin and to Stef Joshua Carson for his dual roles as the Cardinal in Women Beware Women and as Joe in Clifford Odets’ Waiting for Lefty. The Theatre Department is quite pleased to honor these two remarkable performances. JAMES BAKER WOODS III AWARD The James Baker Woods Award is presented to the top rising senior Military Science cadet who has displayed outstanding qualities of leadership, moral character, academic achievement, and aptitude for military service. This year’s award is presented to David Michael Palko. DEAN RUSK International Studies PROGRAM AWARD The Dean Rusk International Studies Program Award is presented each year to the student or students who have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to promoting international awareness at Davidson. This year’s recipient truly exemplifies this quality. Through his hard work on the continuation and expansion of the breakfast discussions series, as well as his efforts on the creation and implementations of various international theme weeks, he has selflessly dedicated himself to the SAC mission of raising international awareness and student involvement across campus. For his outstanding contributions to international education, we are pleased to present the 2008 Dean Rusk International Studies Program Award to Justin Ryan Eusebio. C. SHAW SMITH AWARD The C. Shaw Smith Award is presented annually and recognizes outstanding contributions to the college community through volunteer service with the College Union. This award is named for the first Director of the Union, who served to challenge, love, and provide a little magic to life at Davidson in his career of 31 years. This year’s recipient is the quintessence of the College Union. Her passion, energy, and creativity do not go unnoticed and she can always be found laughing regardless of the task at hand. Though she stands out as a leader, she values teamwork above all else and is always one of first to volunteer her time to others. Davidson Idol and Casino Night are only a few of the projects that she has worked tirelessly on, and while she humbly denies needing public recognition for her efforts, it would be a shame to not honor this outstanding individual. For her consistently positive attitude, her dedication to her fellow Union Board members, and her overall love for union programming, the 2008 C. Shaw Smith Award goes to Alexandra Brooke Pederson. CHARLES MALONE RICHARDS AWARD The Charles Malone Richards Award established in memory of a longtime Davidson pastor and professor, is presented to a rising senior, ordinarily one preparing for the ministry, whose academic record, participation in campus activities, and contribution to community religious life are outstanding. This year’s recipient of the Charles Malone Richards Award is Carolyn Susan Klaasen. AGNES SENTELLE BROWN AWARD Established by Dr. Mark Edgar Sentelle, Professor and Dean of Students at Davidson College, in memory of his sister, this award is presented to an upperclassman of outstanding character, personality, intellectual ability, and scholarship. This year’s winner of the Agnes Sentelle Brown Award is Christopher Devon Burton. GEORGE GLADSTONE MEMORIAL AWARD Established in memory of George L. Gladstone, Jr., Class of 1960, this award is presented to a rising senior exhibiting high potential for service to mankind as demonstrated through leadership, service to the community, and academic record. This year’s winner of the George Gladstone Memorial Award is Hugh Davis Greene. ATHLETIC AWARDSTOMMY PETERS AWARD Today’s Tommy Peters Award winner exhibits the leadership and spirit that have become the trademark of this award. An intense player, this student’s dedication and energy set the tempo for our basketball program. A two-year starter and co-captain, our winner led the nation in assists as a senior, while guiding the Davidson men’s basketball team to their first NCAA Elite Eight appearance since the 1968-69 season. During his four-year career, Davidson won 101 games and recorded a 63-6 mark against Southern Conference competition, including two perfect league slates in 2005 and 2008. The Wildcats’ all-time leader in assists received the following accolades during his final campaign in a Davidson uniform: All-SoCon first team, SoCon All-Tournament team, All-Midwest Regional first team, CollegeInsider.com SoCon Most Valuable Player, CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major All-America Team and All-State first team. This History major finished his career with 1,096 points, 325 rebounds, 663 assists, 121 steals, and 131 three-point field goals. Arguably one of the best point guards in Davidson history, he also ranks among the school’s all-time leaders in steals, three-pointers, and free-throw percentage. REBECCA STIMSON AWARD The Rebecca Stimson Award commemorates a true pioneer and this year's Stimson Award winner personifies the traits associated with the award’s namesake. Her dedication to her sport has yielded significant individual accomplishment while leading the women’s cross country and track teams and setting school records. In cross country, she was the team’s Most Valuable Performer in her sophomore, junior, and senior seasons. She is the school record holder for the 5000-meter course and has been named all-conference for three straight seasons. In track, she holds school records in four events (the indoor 3,000 meters, the indoor and outdoor 5,000 meters, and the outdoor 10,000 meters) and was an NCAA regional qualifier in 2007. That year, she was named the Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Performer of the Year. This student has also been extremely active on campus and in the community. She is a member of Changing Minds, Davidson’s mental health awareness club and has volunteered in many capacities—as a tutor for Carolina Applied Behavior Analysis Service and as an instructor for autistic children at a non-profit treatment center. Our winner plans to begin working at the New England Center for Children, the world's leading autism treatment center, in July. She will then pursue a Ph.D. in applied developmental psychology. This month she was awarded the prestigious NCAA Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship, awarded to a student athlete who demonstrates evidence of superior character and leadership and shows that participation in athletics has been a positive influence on their personal and intellectual development.
