Connecting Your Personal Macintosh Computer to the Davidson College Network (Students)

Mac OS X 10.3.9 and later include all of the necessary software to connect your Macintosh to the campus network and access both College servers and the Internet. This document will help you configure your Mac to use ResNet (residential networking). Before following the instructions in this document, make sure your CAT 5 Ethernet cable is plugged into the correct wall jack.

If you have not used your Macintosh on another network, chances are that if you plug in the network cable it will just work without additional configuration. If it doesn't, you'll need to follow the directions below.

  1. Open Apple Menu | System Preferences..
  2. Click Network.
  3. Change the Show drop down menu to Built-in Ethernet. (In some versions Mac OS, this entry may be listed as "Ethernet built-in" or something else with "Ethernet" in the name. In any case, the correct selection should be clear.)
  4. Set the Configure menu to Using DHCP. Everything else in this box should be left blank.
  5. Click Apply Now. Then close the network preferences box.

You may be prompted to save the configuration changes. If you are, just click Save. You should be able to connect to ResNet now.  If your connection fails, restart.

Open a Web browser to verify that you are able to connect to the Internet. Your computer is now ready to run on the Davidson ResNet, and you may acquire and install any of the optional software available from the ResNet server.
