Getting and Installing Sophos Anti-Virus on Your Personal Macintosh Computer (Students)

All Davidson College students are required to have up-to-date anti-virus software installed on their computers. Davidson College has a license for Sophos Antivirus for Macintosh computers.

To download and install Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X 10.4 or later:

  1. Save and close any open documents and quit all running programs.
  2. In the Finder, select Go | Connect to Server.
  3. In the address field, enter smb://louise/resnet/mac/ and click Connect. When prompted, enter your Davidson username and password.
  4. Copy the folder named Sophos Antivirus to the desktop, then unmount the server (drag its icon to the Trash).
  5. Open the Sophos Antivirus folder. Double-click Sophos Installers.zip to expand the installer program, then open the resultant Sophos Installers folder.
  6. Launch the Sophos Anti-Virus Installer by double-clicking its icon.
  7. When the confirmation sheet appears, click Continue. Then click Continue again.
  8. Read the release notes and license and be sure you understand and agree with them. Then click Continue.
  9. Choose a disk to install the software on. By default, your startup disk will be selected. ITS recommends that you accept this default selection. Click Continue.
  10. Click Install. When the Authenticate window appears, enter your administrator password (the one you use to log in to the machine) and click OK.
  11. The installer will now place the software on your hard drive. When it completes, click Close to quit the installer program.
  12.  Next, double-click the Sophos Settings Updater to configure your automatic update settings.
  13. Click Continue. Then select your startup disk, and click Continue.
  14. Click Install.
  15. Enter your username and password, then click OK. When the installation is complete, click Close.
  16. Delete the Sophos Anti-Virus Installer and the Sophos Settings Updater.

The software is now installed and configured to receive regular automatic updates from Davidson's Sophos server.
