Tonight’s “Sweet 16” matchup at Ford Field in Detroit features 10th-seed Davidson College and 3rd-seed Wisconsin. Davidson is a small, academically rigorous, residential liberal arts college in North Carolina. With just 1,700 students, 162 full-time faculty, 600 staff and 18,723 active alumni, Davidson is demographically dwarfed by the University of Wisconsin. In fact, Wisconsin’s total enrollment of 42,041 is double the number of Davidson’s students, faculty, staff and alumni combined.

So who’s rooting for the upstart mid-major with the mix of intelligence and athletic ability? Davidson is getting support from sources in surprising quarters:

  • At least some of the astronauts on the Space Shuttle Endeavor are cheering for the Wildcats. (Shuttle Commander Dominic Gorie is the parent of Davidson junior Kim Gorie ’09.)
  • A message on the Website of smash-selling alt band REM urges support for the Wildcats.
  •  Homes and businesses throughout the Town of Davidson are decorated with bedsheets painted with messages of support for the ’Cats.  View Photos.
  •  Davidson College President Tom Ross ’72 has received phone calls and emails of support from as far away as Ukraine, Switzerland and China.

Davidson is a highly selective independent liberal arts college for 1,700 students. Since its establishment by 1837 by Presbyterians, Davidson has graduated 23 Rhodes Scholars and is consistently regarded as one of the top liberal arts colleges in the country.
