Davidson College has instituted a policy that states: Faculty, Staff or Students shall not deploy their own wireless network systems because of the security, consistency and interference problems that could result. This policy is put in place to protect the wireless network so that all may be free to use the college's wireless LAN.
This policy prohibits setting up your own wireless access point (a separate piece of equipment), but it also means you must not use the "ad hoc" (also referred to as "computer-to-computer") networking feature that is available on the wireless card in your laptop - the same card that you use to connect to the Davidson network.
Disabling "ad hoc" networking
- Open Apple Menu > System Preferences.
- Select Networking.
- From the Show menu, choose Airport.
- Uncheck "Allow this computer to create networks."
- Click Apply Now.
- Quit System Preferences.
