Each year, Davidson sets aside one or more floors per gender for upperclass* students who desire to live in a substance-free community. These communities have high expectations regarding substance use by residents - students agree to not use alcohol or drugs in the community as well as not bring their effects back onto the hall (e.g. not returning to the hall intoxicated).

Substance Free Applications
Any upperclass student seeking to live in Substance-Free housing must turn in a Substance-Free Housing Application by the deadline (see Lottery Timeline). Download and print the Substance Free Housing Application (pdf) now. Please note that submitting an application does not guarantee a student a space in substance free housing.
Students applying for substance free housing will not know their lottery number at the time of application. Only double rooms are available on sub-free floors and clustering is available in groups of four students who want two double rooms together on the same floor.
Substance Free Housing Room Selection
Substance Free housing applicants will select their rooms separately from other Selection processes (see Lottery Timeline) in the Residence Life Office. Students will learn their lottery numbers upon check-in and will select in lottery number order. Early arrival is essential to allow for processing before selection begins. Please be on time for selection - late arrivals will select rooms at the end, after everyone who arrived on time, regardless of lottery number.
