Tell me about the Davidson Honor Code.

The Honor Code is stated simply and taken seriously:

Each Davidson student is honor bound to refrain from stealing, lying about College business, and cheating on academic work…Cheating includes plagiarism…Each Davidson student is honor bound to report immediately all violations of the Honor Code of which the student has first-hand knowledge; failure to do so shall be a violation of the Honor Code.

Davidson's unique honor code is upheld and enforced by the student body in harmony with the entire Davidson community. Students are elected to the governing Honor Council which oversees all cases relating to Honor Code violations.

The Honor Code is a way of life at Davidson; it governs the community and allows students freedoms rarely found in a college setting. While unproctered tests and self-scheduled exams are advantages to the Code, its greatest benefits can be found in the strong sense of community around which the Davidson experience is centered.

  How diverse is Davidson?

Davidson, believing that the college experience should be based on bringing different kinds of people together to learn from one another, is committed to building a diverse academic and social community -- diverse in many senses of the term.

While the true diversity of background and experience comprising Davidson's student body can never be boiled down to a few statistics, it may be helpful to see a snapshot of this year's incoming first-year class.

Several on-campus student organizations are a part of the Diversity Coordinating Board at Davidson. The Diversity Coordinating Board serves as a student-run alliance among minority organizations on campus and its purpose is to highlight Davidson student groups that promote diversity -- in terms of religion, sexual orientation, and ethnicity.

  How religious is Davidson?

Davidson maintains a deep-seated connection with the Presbyterian Church-USA.  That connection values the life of the spirit, but necessarily demands an openness to and respect for the world’s various faith traditions.

However you identify yourself in a religious sense -- from Jewish to spiritual to Roman Catholic to atheist to Methodist -- it's likely that other Davidson students views life from a similar perspective.

Many Davidson students make religious practice a part of their lives while in college.  Many do not.

Every week, Davidson's campus plays host to a Presbyterian worship service, a Catholic mass, a Muslim prayer meeting, an Episcopal Eucharist, and a Quaker meeting.  Shabbat services and Hillel Fellowship programming are also staples of Davidson's on-campus religious life.

Within walking distance and in nearby Charlotte, students can find services and meetings that touch many other religious and cultural traditions.

Additionally, there are many student organizations that focus on faith and religion.

Davidson has a reputation for academic challenge. How hard is it?

Davidson will be an academic challenge -- college should be.  But that challenge, if you put time and effort into your work and you're engaged academically in the things that you're passionate about, will be both manageable and exciting.

You'll look back on the time you spent reading, discussing, writing, probing, and debating with a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment.

And let's not forget that Davidson students are involved in nearly 150 student groups and many participate in college athletics at the Division 1 level.  There will be free time!  Students often cite the time they spent outside of class -- running track, planning Eating House fundraisers, spending time with close friends, writing music, going to basketball games, tutoring elementary school children -- as the reasons they loved their experiences at Davidson.
