What sorts of student groups exist on campus?

Davidson has nearly 150 student-run organizations. Among them are:

  • political groups
  • academic socieities
  • musical groups
  • international awareness organizations
  • religious and service groups
  • sports teams
  • groups dedicated to social justice
  • media outlets (tv, newspapers, radio)
  • fraternities and eating houses

From Students for a Free Tibet to the Gay-Straight Alliance; from Club Ultimate to Young Life; from Androgyny, a co-ed a cappella group, to the Davidson Mock Trial team, Davidson offers a great deal for students outside the classroom.

And what we don't have yet, we'd love you to start.

Davidson Student Groups

What is there to do for fun?

Davidson students have many social options:

Over the past few years, Tim Reynolds, Salman Rushdie, Paul Farmer, and Paul Rusesabagina (the real-life hero portrayed in the film Hotel Rwanda) have joined various and diverse dance companies, theatre groups, and musical ensembles in headlining the Duke Family Performance Hall, one of many performance spaces on campus.

Davidson’s 106-acre Lake Campus is also a popular spot with students during the late summer and spring.  Located on Lake Norman just five minutes from campus, students can be found here playing beach volleyball, firing up the grill, or lounging with friends on the “peninsula.”

For a list of campus events, take a look at the Campus Calendar.

Is Davidson an NCAA Division 1 college?

Davidson is Division I in all 21 varsity sports.

The combination of outstanding facilities and school spirit makes Davidson an exciting place year-round. Nearly a quarter of the student body is involved in Division I athletics.

The majority of Davidson students will participate in one or more club or intramural sport offerings.

  Tell me about residence life.

Nearly 95% of the Davidson student body lives on campus, with first-year students required to do so.

Within the 17 residence halls, student rooms vary from traditional dormitory-style "doubles" to suite-style and single rooms; apartments are available for seniors.  Housing preferences are given based on a yearly lottery. Most housing is double occupancy, though some single and triple occupancy rooms exist.

Most residence halls separate the genders by floor, though the college allows for co-ed living within grouped single rooms that share a common living space.

There is theme housing available based on student demand and interest, as well, including: foreign language halls, an environmental co-op house, substance-free halls, international interest halls, arts-focused halls, and others. All buildings are wireless and, of course, air-conditioned.

Davidson College features a unique first-year roommate selection process: the results from a personality exam (the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) are factored into roommate pairings!

  What about the surrounding area?

The town of Davidson presents students with several attractions within walking distance: a coffee shop, a book store, Ben & Jerry's, several pizza joints, a sushi bar, several restaurants, an organic grocery store, and a drugstore.

Just down the interstate, Charlotte, with its NFL and NBA teams, dynamic arts scene, and vibrant nightlife, provides a big-city supplement to Davidson social life.  Davidson is situated just 20 minutes north of center-city Charlotte.  Charlotte is easily accessible by public transportation.

The Appalachian Mountains lie less than two hours to the west and the Atlantic Ocean is within an afternoon's reach.

With a temperate climate, all the cultural offerings of a major city, and quick access to an international airport, the Appalachian Trail and the Outer Banks -- it's clear that Davidson students reap the benefits of a highly desirable location.
