CommunityNews - 5/13/08

May 13, 2008

Community News has been created to communicate information about the community and charitable organizations of interest to our faculty and staff.

The following types of messages will be broadcast via this new list:

  • Information about local activities of a charitable organization with which a Davidson College employee is associated but which is not officially sponsored by the college (for example, a local church’s barbecue, a fundraiser for a children’s hospital, or even a notice about girl scout cookie sales would be appropriate)
  • Announcements about non-partisan political forums or public meetings, such as the time and location of a discussion about the public school bond referendum, but not solicitations for donations or advertising for any one candidate or political party
  • Notices about the Town of Davidson that would be of use to the college community, such as information about traffic being redirected during construction

If you have an announcement that you would like to see in Community News, please e-mail us with details!

Housing Organization Seeks Photography Entries for Calendar

Area photographers are invited to submit entries reflecting the theme “Images of Hometowns,” for a 2009 Photography Calendar sponsored by the Davidson Housing Coalition’s HAMMERS program. Entries should depict scenes of Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville or Mooresville, and represent the spirit of the town.

The calendar will feature thirteen images, one for the cover and each month, and the photographer’s name, image title, and caption information for each work. Images will be selected by Christopher Record of Christopher Record Photography and Davidson College photographer Bill Giduz. Images selected for the calendar, and additional submissions, will be on exhibit in Davidson Town Hall in the fall. An opening reception will be held to celebrate the photographers and their work.

Calendars will be sold in Lake Norman area specialty shops, at events, and at www.davidsonhousing.org to benefit the HAMMERS program. An entry fee of $10.00 per photographer is required at the time of submission either online at www.davidsonhousing.org or by mail to P.O. Box 854, Davidson, NC 28036. Each photographer may submit up to three works, and photographers will be responsible for matting work that is selected for exhibition. Digital submissions must be 8” by 10” jpeg files at 200 to 300 dpi. Printed images must be 8” by 10”. Color and black and white photographs will be accepted.

Digital submissions should be made to ann@davidsonhousing.org by 5 p.m. on May 30. Printed images should either be mailed to Davidson Housing Coalition at P.O. Box 854, Davidson, NC 28036 or submitted in person at the DHC office (220 Sloan Street, Suite A in Davidson) between Tuesday, May 27 and Friday, May 30. If submitting images in person, please call DHC at (704) 892-4486 beforehand.

Davidson Housing Coalition is a non-profit organization founded in 1996 to assist lower wealth families in the purchase and rental of safe, decent, and affordable housing. DHC has developed or acquired more than 68 affordable units in its first twelve years of operation. In 2005, the organization created HAMMERS (Hands Around Mecklenburg/Mooresville Making Emergency Repairs Safely) to provide emergency repairs on owner-occupied homes of lower-wealth residents living in hazardous conditions. To date, HAMMERS has repaired 75 homes in the towns of Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, and Mooresville. For more information, call 704-892-4486.
