At Davidson College, we believe that effective performance management is a continuous cycle, not just an annual event. It is an ongoing conversation between supervisors and employees to set goals and expectations, monitor progress throughout the year, confront issues and concerns as they occur, reward successes, and review performance. We provide tools and forms to support these conversations, but the conversations are the key to supporting our employees in their professional growth and ability to successfully contribute in their roles. In short, effective performance management creates a work environment in which people are able to perform to the best of their abilities.
Managing Performance at Davidson -
flexibility
A "one size fits all" approach to Performance Management does not work at Davidson College. As a result, we've developed three different formats for the forms supporting the Performance Management process. Supervisors and managers will have the flexibility to choose the type of form that best suits the needs of the employees within the department. During training, we will offer guidance to help the supervisors choose the most appropriate forms.
timing
The work cycles for different departments vary greatly across campus. Some departments' busy season corresponds to the academic year; whereas other departments are busiest in the summer months. In order for our Performance Management process to be successful, we need to allow the departments on campus to set a cycle for reviews based on the timing that works best for their workload. Each PES member decides which quarter of the calendar year is best within his/her organization. Human Resources will send reminders at appropriate times to help supervisors keep up with the process. Once the annual cycle is complete, forms should be mailed to Human Resources to be added to employees personnel files.
clarity
Clear expectations and communication are important elements of any new program. Each supervisor will be provided the opportunity for training and resources to help guide him or her through the process of providing good, effective coaching and reviews for all employees at Davidson College. The cycle will be clear, the forms will be easy to use, help will be readily available, and compliance and consistency will be tracked!
We need you!
As you begin to use the new forms, please continue to let us know your thoughts and suggestions for improvement. Please Email us or call 704-894-2213 with any comments, questions, or concerns.
Forms
Regardless of the form you choose, you use the same Goal Setting Form and Mid-Year Check-in Form (these, and all other Performance Management forms can be found on Inside Davidson).
