Musical Interludes - Paul Gillies, piano

On March 28 at 12:30 p.m. in Tyler-Tallman Hall of the Sloan Music Center, Paul Gillies will perform a variety of piano solos. There will be a master class at 3:00 p.m. in the same venue.

Pianist Paul Gillies began his musical training in Okinawa, Japan at the age of 12. After three months of study he gave his first public performance, playing an original composition. Since that time, Paul has appeared on stage frequently in both solo and chamber recitals.

Paul received a Bachelor of Music degree in piano from the North Carolina School of the Arts in 2001, where he was a student of Eric Larsen. In 2004, he earned his Master of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music, as a scholarship student of Marc Silverman. In the summer of 2001 he was invited to attend the International Keyboard Institute and Festival in New York City as a full scholarship student.

Performing frequently in master classes throughout this country, Paul has been heard by such artists as Claude Frank, Anton Kuerti, Jerome Rose, and Hélène Grimaud, He was also invited to perform for the evening classes of David Dubal at the Juilliard School. He enjoys performing a wide range of music for the piano. In addition to standards of the piano repertory, he plays many lesser-known works, and has premiered several new compositions. In the winter of 2007, he premiered Kenneth Frazelle’s Winter Traces, and in 2003 he gave the first performance of Lawrence Dillon’s Chicane at the Reynolda House Museum of American Art in North Carolina. Also that year, he performed a solo recital including music of Kenneth Frazelle at the Museum of the American Piano in New York City.

Mr. Gillies  is currently on the faculty at the North Carolina School of the Arts, where he teaches piano literature classes.
