CoverageDavidson College, offers voluntary life insurance for you, your spouse and your children. This is term life insurance and is administered by The Hartford. Employee Coverage: You may elect coverage in any $10,000 increment up to seven times your annual salary (maximum benefit of $500,000). As a new employee, you can be covered with up to a $100,000 policy without evidence of insurability. If you elect any amount over $100,000, or elect coverage for the first time or increase coverage during Open Enrollment, you will have to answer health questions to be submitted to The Hartford Life Insurance for approval. Spouse: You may elect coverage for your spouse in increments of $10,000 up to a maximum of $500,000 (not to exceed 100% of the combined Basic and Supplemental Life coverage in force for the employee). If the employee does not elect supplemental coverage, the spouse may elect 100% of the employee Basic Life coverage rounded to the next highest $10,000). The guaranteed issuance amount is $50,000 without evidence of insurability for a new employee. If your spouse is covered as an employee under this policy, you may not elect additional coverage under this plan. If your spouse is covered, you may also elect a $10,000 policy for your children. Children: If you or your spouse elect voluntary life insurance, you may choose guaranteed coverage of $10,000 for your unmarried children age 6 months to 19 years (age 25 if a full-time student). Important InformationAs is standard with most insurance, this life insurance coverage includes limitations and exclusions, including: - The amount of your coverage may be reduced when you reach certain ages. Supplemental Life coverage is reduced 35% at age 65, another 25% of the original amount at 70, another %15 of the original amount at age 75 and terminates at age 80.
Living Benefits: If you are less than age 60 and diagnosed as terminally ill with a 12-month life expectancy, the Living Benefits Option allows you to receive an accelerated payment of a portion of your life insurance. Waiver of Premium: This provision applies if you become totally disabled before age 60 and your disability lasts for at least 6 months. If approved, your coverage will continue without payment of premium up to age 65, as long as you remain totally disabled. Eligibility- Active full-time employees who are regularly scheduled to work at least 37.5 hours per week (and 12 months/year), effective the first of the month after 30 days of continuous service.
- Active, regular part-time employees (budgeted for at least 1,000 hours/year), effective the first of the month after 60 days of continuous service
- Coverage terminates on employee's termination date. If you terminate employment, portability is an option that allows you to continue life insurance coverage. Contact The Hartford member services number for more information about the portability option.
