Sophos Anti-virus for Home Use (Windows)

Sophos Anti-virus Home Use Option enables Davidson College faculty and staff to install Sophos Anti-virus on personally-owned computers.  The instructions below describe how to install the application which will stay updated via the Internet each time you go online. Updates are downloaded, either manually or automatically, from Central Installation Directories (CIDs) on Davidson's Sophos web server.

You must have access to the Internet to install Sophos Anti-virus on a personally-owned computer.

  1. Open your web browser.
  2. In the Address bar type http://lambert.davidson.edu/remote update (there is a space between remote & update) then press enter.
  3. When prompted, type your Davidson username and password.  Be sure to enter your username in the format of Davidson\xxxxxxx.
  4. Click esxp.exe.  When prompted, choose Run.  (If you are using Internet Explorer you may receive a security warning pop-up -- choose Run).
  5. While the installation of the application is taking place, you may not see much activity on your computer.  It is important that you wait for a blue shield to appear in your task tray near your clock. There may be a few quick pop-ups as it installs.
The shield will change color from gray to blue while it is installing and updating.  The left side of the shield will flash while it is updating then turn back to four solid blue bars once all updates are completed.  Any time the Sophos shield is solid you may hover your mouse over it to learn when the last update took place.
  6. Once the Sophos shield has stopped flashing you may close your browser.  The installation is completed.
  7. Email the Help Desk to let ITS know that you have downloaded Sophos for home use.

There is not an automatic daily or weekly scan configured by default.  To do so, follow the steps listed below.

  1. Right click the blue shield and select Open Sophos Anti-Virus.
  2. Select set up a new scan.
  3. Type a name for the scan that will help you identify it in the future.
  4. Select the drive/drives you want the anti virus application to check when performing the automatic scan.
  5. Select Configure this Scan at the bottom of the window.
  6. On the Individual Scan Settings window, select the cleanup tab.
  7. Select the box beside automatically clean up items that contain a virus, then select delete, then click OK.
  8. Once back on the main setup page select schedule this scan.
  9. Select enable schedule.
  10. Select the day/days that best meet your needs for scanning your computer.
  11. Under the times when the scan will run, select Add,  then enter the time that best meets your needs and click OK.
  12. Type your password for your computer.  (You must enter your personal password to schedule the automatic scanning option.  This password is NEVER transmitted Davidson, it is only used by your computer) then click OK.
  13. On the main setup page select save and start.  Your first system scan will automatically start.

After successfully installing Sophos, you should uninstall any other anti-virus application installed on your computer.   (Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs)
