Prof. Neil Lerner at the National Gallery

September 24, 2007

On October 13, 2007, at 2:00 and 4:30 PM, Copland scholar and Associate Professor Neil Lerner will introduce three films with scores by Aaron Copland. Prof. Lerner studied the first film, The Cummington Story (1945), in his doctoral dissertation and then at greater length in an essay in Aaron Copland and His World (Princeton Univ. Press, 2005). The other two films are Of Mice and Men (1939) and The North Star (1943).

All three films are informative examples of how Copland's compositional style affected Hollywood's musical norms, bringing a U.S. flavor to what had been a strongly European-dominated language.
