The class of 2013 was introduced to Davidson College's strong value for service through the Orientation Service Walk on the morning of August 22nd. Students, faculty, staff, and community members walked approximately five kilometers through the town to learn about the Davidson community and its history.
The walk “kicked off” Davidson College's year-long Engage for Change efforts, raising a record-breaking $7,100 for the Free Clinic of Our Towns at the Ada Jenkins Center. Engage for Change is a year-long focus on a single theme for social action. This year’s theme is “Healthy People, Healthy Communities” and will focus on elements that make-up a healthy community and work towards eliminating the gaps that exist for some groups in terms of access to health care resources.
Students gathered for a pre-walk assembly to hear about Davidson's strong value for service from Stacey Riemer, the assistant dean of students for community service. Sara Bates, class of 2011 and student leader of the Engage for Change steering committee, offered the keynote address.
New students who participated in the walk received a Camelbak® re-usable water bottle and Harris Teeter donated a "green" shopping bag to each walk participant. Harris Teeter and the Healthy Home Market were walk sponsors providing water for the walkers. At the end of the walk, students gathered in the Union Atrium for a CROP-style lunch.
