Mark taught at a middle school in Raleigh and then worked at RTI doing educational research. He moved to the Bay Area in 2000 and received his Masters in Public Policy from UC Berkeley in 2004. Rafael Candelario II '94
Rafael is currently a Major in the United States Marine Corps and is enrolled in the National Security Affairs Masters Program focusing on the Western Hemisphere at the Naval Postgraduate School. Before joining the Marine Crps, he taught History and Gender Studies at Durham Academy. Since joining the Marine Corps, Rafael has served around the world in support of the "war on terror" in Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Djibouti. Rafael and his wife have two sons, Rafael and Gabriel. Katy McDaniel '94
Katy McDaniel, 1994, earned her PhD at Vanderbilt. She is an Associate Professor of History at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio. She and her husband have a 14-month-old son Hal and are expecting another baby in February. mcdaniek@marietta.edu
Rachel Newcomb `95
After completing an M.A. in creative writing at Johns Hopkins University, Rachel earned a Ph.D. in anthropology from Princeton University in 2004 with a dissertation entitled “`Singing to So Many Audiences’: Negotiations of Gender, Identity and Social Space in Fes, Morocco,” a country in which she pursued research for her Kelley thesis. Cyndy earned her MFA degree in directing from Brooklyn College in 2002. After six years with a large law firm that defended clients against medical malpractice suits, Jamie has “done a 180” and as of 2006, serves the other side as unnamed partner in a firm that represents plaintiffs in such cases. Henry Heil earned a master's degree in American History from the Univeristy of South Carolina in 2001, writing his thesis on school desegregation in Virginia. Since graduation, Michael Kruse has pursued his journalistic interest in a variety of venues. He has worked for the ACC Basketball Handbook, the Prep Star's Recruiter's Handbook and PrepStars.com, ESPN.com, and the Times Herald-Record in New York's Hudson Valley. Currently he is a reporter for the St. Petersburg Times, or what he calls the biggest and "best" newspaper in Florida. Michael is currently completing a book about Davidson basketball. Rob received his J.D. degree from Emory University School of Law in May, 2006, where he was editor-in-chief of the law review. He clerked for Judge Julia Smith Gibbons on the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Having decided to pursue graduate training in East Asian studies, Wes returned to China for eight weeks during the summer of 2007 for intensive language study and has begun an M.A. program at Stanford and plans eventually to earn his Ph.D.

Brian is currently in his third year at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. Having received a grant funded by the school's Pediatric Department and the NIH, he is taking a year out to research various ways to train pediatricians in counseling parents about secondhand smoke exposure, smoking among adolescents, and images of smoking and tobacco that teenagers view on the internet. Jonny joined Teach for America after graduation and began teaching sixth grade in New Orleans. Seven days later, Hurrican Katrina hit and his school closed. He returned in October and began working for Save the Children, conducting psychosocial programs to help school children process their responses to the storm. He is now in his second year of teaching and coaching baseball at a KIPP (Knowledge is Power Program) middle school for the creative arts located in the French Quarter. Emily May has been awarded a fellowship to attend the Shear-Mellon Undergraduate Seminar in Early American History. This highly competitive award allows her and nine other rising senior history majors from across the country to spend three weeks in Philadelphia at the University of Pennsylvania doing archival research and working with historians.
