Resources for Hall Counselors

The First Year Service Experience
The First Year Service Experience serves as an opportunity for hall counselors to introduce freshmen to the many service experiences available on-campus and in the Davidson area. First year students do direct service as well as education and reflection components in a year-long group process that exposes them to the value and challenges of community service.

Service Programming
All freshmen halls are required to complete one service program each semester, one of which must be direct service.  Examples of direct service include:

  • Participating in a Habitat build
  • Serving as a mentor
  • Volunteering at the Ada Jenkins Center
  • Participating in a Service Saturday

Freshmen halls can also receive credit for participating in an indirect service project, which is educational or reflection-based.  Examples of indirect service include:

  • Attending a Hunger Panel
  • Attending a Project Life Spaghetti Dinner
  • Attending an Engage for Change event

Hall counselors who are interested in planning their own service project can visit the Community Service Office for guidance, or read the Project Planning Guide for guidelines.

Reflecting on Your Experience
Hall counselors must complete an evaluation form for each service project, and return it via mail or email to Casie Hermes in the Community Service Office.
