“James Nyoraku Schlefer is a master of the shakuhachi.” - New York Times From tales of the Geisha, to the poetry of nature, the stories of old Japan unfold through the rich musical tradition represented by Ensemble East. The Japanese chamber music ensemble features koto (Japanese zither) and shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute). The Ensemble’s concerts are enlivened with commentary about the pieces and their historical background, as well as performances of modern Japanese solo and ensemble repertoire. James Nyoraku Schlefer is a leading performer and teacher of the shakuhachi in New York City. In 2001, Mr. Schlefer received the Dai-Shi-Han or Grand Master's Certificate, one of only a handful of non-Japanese to receive this high level award. Tickets are available at the door, online, by calling 704-894-2135, or by visiting the Union Box Office in the Knobloch Campus Center. Place your order now to reserve tickets. Subscribe to the Davidson College Concert Series and receive tickets to all five events for the price of four!
