Internships

The Van Every/Smith Galleries, Davidson College offer a comprehensive internship program that equips students with hands on gallery experience. There are two different types of internships: The Gallery Internship open to anyone regardless of major or class year and The Gallery Research Internship designed for Art History and Art Studio majors entering their Junior or Senior year.

GALLERY INTERNSHIP: (Open to all Davidson students)

Brief Description:
This internship will introduce the intern to all aspects of the gallery from handling and installing art to researching artwork in the permanent collection. Most of the intern’s work will consist of assisting the curator and director with the day to day workings of the gallery. The benefit of this internship is immersion in the life of the gallery - experiencing what it’s like to work in a gallery from day to day.

Hours: At the beginning of each semester the intern will establish a weekly schedule that they will follow for the semester. Most interns work at least 2 hours and up to 10 hours per week.

Who should apply: Any student regardless of major or class year.

How to apply: Send an e-mail to Assistant Curator, Jessica Cooley stating your interest in the internship, your major, class year, and if you have any specific areas of interest in which you would like to concentrate.

GALLERY RESEARCH INTERNSHIP: (Open to Studio Art and Art History Majors)

Brief Description: This internship will include the introductory aspects of the regular Gallery Internship, but with a concentration in research, curation, and writing. The intern will need to have knowledge of art history and how to write critically about works of art. Depending on the gallery schedule there will often be an opportunity to curate a small exhibition, write wall text for exhibitions, and sometimes to have work published in exhibition catalogs, books, or articles. This is an excellent way to prepare for graduate school and future work in the art world.

Hours: At the beginning of each semester the intern will establish a weekly schedule that they will follow for the semester. Most interns work at least 2 hours up to 10 hours per week.

Who Should Apply: Junior and Senior Art History and Studio Art majors.

How to Apply: Send an e-mail to Assistant Curator, Jessica Cooley stating your interest in the internship, your major, class year, and if you have any specific areas of interest in which you would like to concentrate.

All interns will attend two seminars per semester that will address issues in the art world and the gallery. Topics will include how to use collections management software, gallery installation, framing and matting, and other topics of interest to interns. These seminars will be based on the interests and requests of interns and will vary from year to year.
