Auditions for the Davidson vocal and instrumental ensembles will take place during the first week of classes on August 27-30, 2007. Rehearsals for the ensembles will begin the following week.

VOCAL AUDITIONS

Auditions Fall 2007 choral auditions will take place on August 27-30, 2:00 - 6:00 pm, in Sloan 107. All students, even returning choir members, need to sign up for an audition slot.

Auditions consist of vocalizes, pitch matching and vocal flexibility exercises, and sight-reading tests. Audition sign up sheets are posted outside Dr. Sprague's office in Sloan 107, and will also be available at the College's Activities Fair on Sunday August 26.

Faculty and staff who want to sing in Concert Choir should contact Dr. Sprague directly. Prior experience (college, church, community, etc.) is extremely desirable but not necessarily a prerequisite. For more information, contact Professor Ray Sprague, Director, Concert Choir.

INSTRUMENTAL AUDITIONS

Tuesday, August 28: Woodwinds (no saxophones), brass, and orchestral percussion
Wednesday, August 29: Woodwinds, brass, jazz rhythm & saxophones
Thursday, August 30: strings

Sign-up sheets are posted on the bulletin board outside of Sloan 200 (the instrumental rehearsal room.)

When you arrive on campus, please sign up for a time. If you are interested in participating in both the DCSO and the Jazz Ensemble, in most cases, you will not need to audition twice. If you are a percussionist/drummer or a bassist and would like to audition for both groups, please contact Dr. William Lawing to see if it is necessary to sign up for two slots.

For your audition, please prepare one or two contrasting pieces that you feel comfortable playing. If you decide to only prepare one piece, it should contain both lyrical and more technical material. You do not need to exceed five minutes total. It is best to choose selections that accurately reflect your ability, no matter what your level. You will not be asked to play scales or arpeggios. Students auditioning for the orchestra will not be asked to do any sight-reading. On rare occasions, those auditioning for the Jazz Ensemble may be asked to do a bit of sight-reading.

Special note for students auditioning for the DCSO: In addition to your one or two prepared pieces, you will be asked to play some orchestral excerpts from music for the upcoming season. You can download these excerpts from the links below (you'll need a PDF reader), or you can pick up hard copies from the board outside of Sloan 200 when you arrive on campus. More emphasis will be placed upon your prepared pieces, but the orchestral excerpts will give you a sense of what the repertoire will be like for the coming season.

If you have questions about auditions for the DCSO, please contact Professor Tara Chamra.
