Studio Art Information

Upon declaration of a (Studio) Art Major you will receive a Studio Art Major Handbook that includes:

1) Application for Individual Studio
Any declared art major with an emphasis in studio art is eligible for a student studio.  An application is to be completed and returned to Brenda King during the first week of classes in each semester.  All applications will be reviewed by the studio faculty and assignments will be made on a priority basis, as explained on the application.  If you are assigned a studio, you can receive your key by bringing a $10 cash refundable deposit to Brenda.  Your deposit will be returned at the end of spring semester after your studio has been cleared and checked out and the key returned.

2) Rules for Students Using Individual Studios
This handout provides guidelines for use of a student studio.

3) Policy on Study Abroad
This policy ensures that courses taken through the study abroad programs of other institutions are as academically rigorous and comprehensive as a comparable course offered at or through Davidson College.  The policy is as follows:

  • Art majors may receive up to two credits towards their major for courses taken abroad.
  • Students will need to submit documentation of work done to the department assistant, Brenda King, by September 10th for the previous spring or summer semester's courses, or February 10th for the fall semester's.
  • Documentation includes syllabus,  class notes, any papers written, projects undertaken, tests, and the final examination.
  • For a studio class, all two-dimensional work and documentation of three-dimensional work should be submitted.
  • The material will be evaluated by a committee of either studio or art history faculty, as appropriate, in order to determine whether the work meets department standards.
  • If in the faculty's opinion the case is borderline, the student will be asked to pass a test to verify her or his competency in the subject matter of the course in question.

REMINDER:  The department does not assign credit for graduation.  That is the Registrar's responsibility.

4) Course Review for Credit Form
This is a copy of the form that is to be submitted with the materials from any course taken at or through another educational institution.  Please be sure to complete a different form for each course and attach it to the materials when submitting them for review.  At the completion of the review the department will notify you and the Registrar's Office of the outcome, and you will be asked to pick up your course materials.

5) Art 397 and 401
The first page provides general information about the two required upper-level courses for studio majors:  Junior Advanced Study and Senior Exhibition and Exam.   The second and third pages contain the lists of artists for whom you will be responsible in Art 397 and Art 401.
