Schedule for the Exhibition Season 2003-2004

Doug Houchens:

The Primary Impulse

August 28 – October 8, 2003

Retrospective exhibition of paintings and drawings by Davidson College Professor Emeritus Doug Houchens. Mr. Houchens, Davidson's first visual arts professor, is known for his vibrant, expressionistic paintings based on stills from classic movies. A full-color catalogue with essays by Davidson College Professor of English Gill Holland and alumnus Dabney Stuart will be available.

 Benjamin "Old Folks" Davis

October 16 – December 10, 2003

The first-ever exhibition of works by self-taught Charlotte artist Benjamin "Old Folks" Davis (1938-2000). Mr. Davis produced over 300 works in a six-year period, drawing inspiration from editorial photographs in The Charlotte Observer to chronicle cultural events of the 1990's. A full-color brochure with an essay by Brooke Davis Anderson, Director and Curator of the Contemprorary Center of the American Folk Art Museum, will be available.

Philip Lopez

August 28 – October 8, 2003

A site-specific installation of constructed mixed-media works that build on geometric forms and patterns. Mr. Lopez distresses the surfaces, creating the patina of worn paint and softening what could otherwise be rough or hard material.

John Hill

October 16 –  December 10, 2003

Hyper-sexual, quirky, and meticulous drawings of fantastic creatures in clustered scenarios. Think R. Crumb meets Rube Goldberg.

Chuck Close: Prints and Process

January 22 – February 27, 2004

Editioned works by one of America's most admired artists. This exhibition will examine the diverse and innovative methods Mr. Close has developed with master printers to create dynamic variations of the same subject. A full-color brochure with essay by June Lambla, Curator and Director of the Print Room at Hodges-Taylor Gallery, will be available.

An exhibition of new, realist still-life paintings that highlight oft-ignored objects such as pillows and rolls of toilet paper. Mr. Kleinlein is the current Visiting Assistant Professor of Art at Davidson College. A full-color brochure will be available.
