Dr. Sarah K. Mason will be joining the Davidson faculty this fall 2007 as Assistant Professor of Mathematics. Dr. Mason is an NSF Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley. She earned her doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania, and her bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia, transferring after a first year at UNC Chapel Hill. Dr. Mason’s research lies in algebraic and enumerative combinatorics, and this work brought her to the Centre de Recherches Mathématiques at the University of Montreal for the spring 2007 term for a special thematic semester on "Recent Advances in Combinatorics." At Penn, Dr. Mason received three different teaching awards as a graduate student. There, she helped develop a creative course called “Learning Math by Teaching Math” where college students taught geometry projects at a local high school. Her students learned advanced geometric topics in class and gained a deeper understanding of the mathematics through teaching. This past fall, she taught Abstract Algebra at Berkeley.
Dr. Mason has broad interests, including environmental studies and the potential for service learning. When not in the classroom, Dr. Mason is an avid triathlete. Welcome Dr. Sarah Mason!
