The Davidson Scholars ProgramThe Davidson Scholars Program provides scholarship aid to scholar athletes who project academically into the top 50% of Davidson's entering freshman class, and who will be exceptional performers in NCAA Division I athletics. Alex Porter '60 and Lowell Bryan '68 established the Davidson Scholars Program in order to attract the country's finest scholar athletes to Davidson. Since the program's inception, DSP recipients have graduated with honors in their fields of study and have been recognized as All-Americans in their respective sports. Program Mechanics Donors create a DSP scholarship with a commitment of $20,000 payable over four years. The fund established by Porter and Bryan then matches these gifts one-to-one. For example, a $20,000 commitment to baseball, paid over four years, will be matched with $20,000 to create a $40,000 scholarship for baseball.
With endowed scholarships, the match applies to the amount of the scholarship activated each year. For example, an endowed scholarship with a market value of $100,000 generates $5,000 in funds per year. The matching amount will thus be $5,000. The matching mechanics for endowed funds work the same as the matching mechanics for expendable DSP scholarships (i.e. matching funds will go to the sport designated by the donor).
