Year 1: Self Awareness and Self Management

I never really considered how important focusing on myself was in order to be an effective leader for others.
- First Year Chidsey Fellow

First year Chidsey Leadership Fellows explore their own personalities, values, and strengths in the context of a diverse learning community. This enables them to have a deeper sense of their particular uniqueness and appreciate the ways that diversity impacts groups.

First year Fellows participate in weekly meetings followed by dinner from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Monday nights.  First year Fellows can expect to:

  • Assess their own strengths, values, emotional intelligence, and learning style.
  • Reflect on these assessments and use them for setting leadership development goals.
  • Share their individual story with the cohort.
  • Design and deliver a workshop for the high school leadership conference.
  • Reflect on their leadership.
  • Get to know the members of their cohort formally and informally.
  • Explore the relationship between ethics and leadership.
  • Meet one-on-one with a Chidsey staff member at least once each semester.
  • Connect with upperclassmen in the Chidsey Fellows program.
