For our graduating seniors, the 2005-06 school year ended with a wonderful departmental reception in the Carolina Inn. Hosted by Scott Denham, the Open House was well-attended and lasted past midnight, due perhaps to several cases of the finest authentic German beer brewed in this country. How did we get our hands on it? Penn Brewery was kind enough to give it to us free of charge. The Pittsburgh craft brewery was founded by Tom Pastorius, father of Franz Pastorius '06 and descendant (Ur-Ur-Ur-Ur-Ur-Ur-Urenkel) of Franz Daniel Pastorius, who brought the first German settlers to the New World in 1683. Ironically, this founder of Germantown was born in Sommerhausen, a picturesque wine village just south of Würzburg--where Franz '06 and many other Davidson students spent their junior year abroad.
As the photo shows, a good time was had by all. From left to right: Franz Pastorius, David Andersen, Dr. Henke, Heather Carmody, Ted Dawson, Chase Lovellette. Not pictured are the other JYA students and graduating German majors: Amanda Eppolito, Christine Haycook, Eric LaForest, Kate Turner, Patrick Walsh. Best of luck to all of you--and stay in touch!
