Department of German and Russian
Mission, Core Processes, and Assessment Tools

Mission

The Department's primary academic mission comprises the following:

M1
To teach German or Russian to students at all levels of language competence and to move students toward fluency in the language;

M2
To expose beginning and intermediate language students to the literature and culture of the language they study;

M3
To expose all students to the literature and culture of German- or Russian-speaking groups;

M4
To expose advanced language students to complex issues in the literature and culture of the language they study;

M5
To afford students the opportunity to do advanced, independent research in German or Russian;

M6
To prepare students for graduate school and a variety of careers;

M7
To encourage and enable students to study abroad in German- or Russian-speaking countries;

M8
To enhance international awareness on campus;

M9
To expose in a public forum students and the community to issues pertaining to the study of German or Russian;

To support interdisciplinary curricular offerings that pertain to the study of German or Russian;

To seek continually to improve teaching on all levels;

To enhance the articulation of foreign language programs in North Carolina in particular and the United States in general;

To support the Trustees, the President, and the Vice-President of Academic Affairs by sharing in committee and advisory tasks;

To support all administrative constituencies on campus in matters pertaining to the Department, its faculty, or its students;

To undertake other customary activities expected of Davidson faculty, including research and other aspects of professional development, involvement in scholarly and other professional societies, service to the profession, and service to the local community.
