Classics Spring Semester Abroad

PROGRAM DATES: * Spring semester: January 11 - May 11 ELIGIBILITY: * Students in good standing * Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION: * English LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: * Hotels APPLICATION DEADLINE: * September 15 The Program Every other year, the Department of Classics offers a traveling program, taught by a member of the Department and devoted to the study of classical antiquity. The group spends the entire spring semester visiting selected archaeological sites and museums in Egypt, Greece, Turkey, Italy and Germany. Group travel is the rule, but spring vacation provides an opportunity for independent travel in the Mediterranean region. The program terminates in Europe, so participants who wish may travel further on their own. Prof. Krentz will lead the next program in the spring of 2009.

Course Credits The program comprises the following four courses: 1. CLA 253 GREEK AND ROMAN HISTORY (HIS 111) 2. CLA 254 GREEK AND ROMAN LITERATURE 3. CLA 257 GREEK AND ROMAN ART AND ARCHITECTURE (ART 232) 4. CLA 258 GREEK AND ROMAN ARCHAEOLOGY
CLA 253 (HIS 111) fulfills the core requirement in history, and CLA 257 (ART 232) fulfills the core requirement in Fine Arts. Classics majors who successfully complete the program are exempted from the required distribution of courses in literature, history, and art.
Eligibility and Criteria for Selection Students with sophomore, junior, or senior status may apply. Classics majors are not necessarily given preference in the selection process. We can take a maximum of 16 students. This Program is ONLY open to Davidson Students.
The criteria for selection are: (1) demonstrated seriousness of academic purpose, (2) diversity of interests, and (3) social traits likely to help make a delightfully memorable experience out of seventeen strenuous weeks of living in intimate contact with sixteen other individuals in an academically and physically rigorous program that is constantly on the move.

Applications, including all supporting materials, are due in the Study Abroad Office. Deadline: Monday, September 15, 2008* Notification: Monday, October 13, 2008 * Individual interviews with the program director will be scheduled shortly after the application deadline. Financial Information The comprehensive fee for the program covers tuition, transportation (including round-trip air fare from an east coast departure point), hotels, and entrance fees to museums and archaeological sites. Most breakfasts and some other meals are also included.
The fee does not include most meals, books, incidental expenses, travel beyond planned group excursions, and passport and visa fees. Students will be on their own for (1) spring break, starting when we reach Athens on Saturday, February 28, until we reconvene in Athens on Monday, March 9, and (2) Easter break, starting when we reach Rome on Friday, April 3, until we reconvene in Rome on Monday, April 13.
Additional Program Information Davidson College reserves the right to cancel or modify part or all of a study abroad program should changing circumstances make it necessary to do so. In cases where the college has security concerns, the program director and the Dean Rusk Program Director will gather information and make a recommendation to the Dean of Faculty. The dean will take his decision to the president, who retains ultimate authority to decide whether or not a particular Davidson-sponsored trip should proceed. Davidson admits qualified students without discrimination because of race, color, religion, national origin, age, handicap, gender, or sexual preference.
