Bio
After taking his Ph.D. in 1982, Mark McCulloh came to Davidson in the fall of the same year. He directed the Davidson Junior Year Abroad in Marburg from 1984 to 1986. He returned to Germany to direct the program (now in Würzburg) once more in 1994-95, and again in 1998-99. Between 1990 and 1999 he served as chair of the department. For many years he also served as director of the Self-Instructional Languages Program.

W.G. Sebald:
This remarkable contemporary writer (Susan Sontag has called his work "sublime . . . unlike anything you've ever read") is the subject of a book written for the University of South Carolina Press. Sebald was a professor of German who lived in England for 30 years. He started writing in his mid-40s. Try his novels Vertigo,The Rings of Saturn, or the more recent Austerlitz.
