Sebald was a professor of German who lived in England for 30 years. He started writing in his mid-40s. Try his novels Vertigo,The Rings of Saturn, or the more recent Austerlitz. Click here for examples of films alluded to in his highly acclaimed The Emigrants. Or read my books, Understanding W. G. Sebald (USC Press, 2003), which was selected as a Choice 2003 Outstanding Academic Title, and W. G. Sebald: History - Memory - Trauma (de Gruyter, 2006), which I co-edited with Scott Denham.
