Summer Institute for German Teachers

Goals and Organization

Sponsored by the Goethe Institute, the Davidson College Summer Institute for German Teachers offers a convenient, affordable, and intellectually stimulating summer format for German teachers to increase their mastery of German and knowledge of Germanic literatures and cultures while earning teaching certificate renewal credits (one Davidson credit, equivalent to four semester hours).

All participants are enrolled in three mini-seminars, each meeting one and one-half hours daily for one week. Lunches are treated as German Tables, with the Institute faculty joining the participants for meals and conversation in German. Evenings will feature German films related to the seminar themes. Since all participants are expected to commit to speaking German only, the Institute is a weeklong Sprachbad.

Courses

Three seminars are being offered: "Aufgaben und Übungen" (Dr. Henke, Davidson College), "Rainer Maria Rilke" (Dr. Denham, Davidson College) und "Geschichte im Sprachunterricht" (Dr. Howards, Wake Forest University). See detailed course descriptions.

Location

Located 20 miles north of Charlotte, Davidson is a small, nationally ranked college dedicated to quality education in the liberal arts.

Lodging and Meals

Institute participants will be lodged in single, modern, air-conditioned and networked dormitory rooms (sheets and towels included; shared showers and restrooms) on the campus and will take meals at the nearby Vail Commons.


Credits

Participants who complete the Institute successfully will be awarded one Davidson College credit (German 499: Studies in German Culture) of four semester hours. Participants who successfully complete a Goethe Institute examination will be mailed their certificate approximately four weeks after the conclusion of the Institute.

Costs

For the 2010 Institute, each participant will be required to pay only a $350 fee upon application to the Institute (non-refundable after June 1). All other expenses for tuition, meals, lodgings, and facilities fees will be waived. However, additional expenses for lodging, meals, and fees apply for those participants who wish to take a Goethe Institute examination on Saturday, August 1 (Start Deutsch 1 or 2, Zertifikat Deutsch, Goethe-Zertifikat B2, or Goethe-Zertifikat C1).

Registration

Twenty participants will be admitted on a “first come, first served” basis, assuming appropriate credentials. The small group size is intended to insure maximum attention and benefit to the participants. The $350 fee (non-refundable after June 1), a short professional resume, and a written pledge to use German only during the Institute week must accompany the completed registration form to secure admission. Please make checks payable to “Davidson College—German Institute.”

Participants wishing to take a Goethe Institute examination at the conclusion of the Summer Institute should indicate so as soon as possible.
