Program Highlights Students will spend approximately 10-12 weeks in Arequipa where they will live with Peruvian families. Classes will be held at the Universidad San Augustín, a local public university. Program highlights are:
- The normal academic course-load will include: two intensive Spanish language courses; a course taught by Dr. Crandall, 'Latin American Political Fiction'; and a course taught in English by a team of Peruvian professors on Incan and Peruvian History and Society;
- Students can also audit any course offered at the university;
- Students will have opportunities to pursue non-credit internships with a variety of organizations such as social justice, micro-enterprise, and environmental non-profits, orphanages, or the city government;
- Extra-curricular courses and activities, such as folk music and dance will be offered
There will be a few weekend excursions to the beach and rural indigenous communities.
Travel Plans The group will travel for one week before arriving in Arequipa and two weeks afterward. Highlights include: - The capital city of Lima. We will visit human rights groups, micro-enterprises, the U.S. embassy, and other sites.
- A three-day bus trip from Lima to Arequipa where, on the way, we will visit the famous Nasca lines, a marine mammal sanctuary, a desert oasis, a pisco (grape brandy) winery, and a broccoli farm that exports its products to the United States.
- A two-week trip at the end of the semester that will take us to Lake Titikaka, the Incan capital of Cusco, Machu Picchu including the vaunted ‘Inka Trail’, the Peruvian Amazon, and many sights in between.
Financial Information The regular Davidson full fee applies. In 2007, it should be about $20,000. The program fee covers most expenses from the time the student leaves Charlotte until he/she returns to Charlotte at the conclusion of the program. International airfare, housing, meals, and excursions are all included. Financial aid is treated the same as if the student were on campus.
