Whether you already had MS Office installed or just installed it at Davidson, use these instructions to configure Outlook. Note: Outlook Express is not the same thing as Outlook. Outlook Express (or Windows Mail in Vista) cannot be used Microsoft Exchange servers, which is what Davidson uses - you need the "full client" version of Outlook that comes with Microsoft Office. If you don't have it on your computer, install Davidson's version of Office 2007. Outlook 2007 - Go to Start > Control Panel > Mail, then choose “Show Profiles.” Click on “Add…” Name the new profile “Davidson On-Campus”.
- You should be prompted to enter your e-mail address. Enter yourusername@davidson.edu (If you did not receive this message or encountered an error, proceed to the Manual Configuration section below.
- Click “Finish.” In the Mail Profiles window we opened first, where it says “Always use this profile,” change the selection to “Davidson On-Campus.” Click OK.
- You may now open Outlook from “Microsoft Office” on the Start Menu. Outlook may prompt you for your network password, and take a few minutes to download your e-mail and settings from the server.
Manual Configuration (continued from step 2 above): - Select “Manually Configure Server Settings” and click “Next.”
- For mail server type, choose “Microsoft Exchange Server.”
- Enter exchange.davidson.edu
- Check “Use Cached Exchange Mode.”
- The user name is yourusername
- Click “Check Name” to verify your connection to the server. When prompted, enter davidson\yourusername
The first time Outlook starts it may be slow to display all of your mail, if you have a lot of it; this is due to setting up the cached mode and is a one-time issue. Outlook 2003 /> Launch Outlook using the icon under the Start menu (probably called Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 and located inside the Microsoft Office folder). Depending on if/how Outlook has been used before on your computer, you'll see slightly different prompts. Here is the information you will need to fill them in: - You want to configure an email account.
- Your mail server type is Microsoft Exchange Server />.
- Use exchange />as the Exchange Server name (later Outlook will change this to some other name, which is OK).
- Check Use cached Exchange mode if you want to be able to filter out junk mail (recommended).
- The user name is your network username.
- Use Check Names to verify your connection to the server. When prompted, enter davidson\yourusername as the username, and your network password. Check Names will change your username into your name in Last, First format, which means your mailbox has been verified.

Check Names will change your username into your name in Last, First format, which means your mailbox has been verified.
- You will have to enter your network password each time you start up Outlook.
Office 2000 and earlier These old versions are no longer supported - we recommend that you upgrade to Office 2007.
