Network: Windows XP

The default settings in Windows will let you connect to the Davidson network. If your connection does not work initially, your settings may have been changed by a previous network connection or by the computer vendor. Use the following steps to get your settings back to normal.

Make sure the TCP/IP protocol is installed

  1. Open the Start menu and choose Network Connections. Right-click on Local Area Connection. Choose Properties from the menu.
  2. If TCP/IP appears in the list of installed protocols, skip to the "Configuring TCP/IP" section below.
  3. To install the TCP/IP protocol, click on the Install button, double click Protocol, double click TCP/IP, and insert your Windows XP CD if prompted to do so.

Configuring TCP/IP

  1. Open the Start menu and choose Network Connections. Right-click on Local Area Connection. Choose Properties from the menu. Highlight the TCP/IP entry and click the Properties button.
  2. Check both the Obtain an IP address automatically and the Obtain DNS server address automatically radio buttons. Click on the Advanced... button at bottom.
  3. Click on the DNS tab at the top of the screen.
  4. Make sure the option Register this connection's addresses in DNS, towards the bottom of the screen, is not checked.
  5. Click OK to close this dialog box, and close the Network Connections window. You may need to reboot your computer for the changes to take effect.
