The default settings in Windows will let you connect to the Davidson network. If your connection does not work initially, your settings may have been changed by a previous network connection or by the computer vendor. Use the following steps to get your settings back to normal. Make sure the TCP/IP protocol is installed - Open the Start menu and choose Network Connections. Right-click on Local Area Connection. Choose Properties from the menu.
- If TCP/IP appears in the list of installed protocols, skip to the "Configuring TCP/IP" section below.
- To install the TCP/IP protocol, click on the Install button, double click Protocol, double click TCP/IP, and insert your Windows XP CD if prompted to do so.
Configuring TCP/IP - Open the Start menu and choose Network Connections. Right-click on Local Area Connection. Choose Properties from the menu. Highlight the TCP/IP entry and click the Properties button.
- Check both the Obtain an IP address automatically and the Obtain DNS server address automatically radio buttons. Click on the Advanced... button at bottom.
- Click on the DNS tab at the top of the screen.
- Make sure the option Register this connection's addresses in DNS, towards the bottom of the screen, is not checked.
- Click OK to close this dialog box, and close the Network Connections window. You may need to reboot your computer for the changes to take effect.
