Optional: Macintosh - Microsoft Office 2008

Our standard office suite for Macintosh is Microsoft Office 2008, updated to version 12.1.1. This software is provided free for your use during your tenure here at Davidson. To acquire this software, follow these directions.

  1. From the Finder, Click "Go" and then "Connect to Server."  Connect to the ResNet share by typing in smb://louise/resnet/, then open the Mac folder, then the Office 2008 folder.
  2. Double-click the file named 1 Office 2008 Installer.dmg. A virtual disk will appear on your desktop containing the software installer.
  3. Run the Microsoft Office 2008 installer, selecting whatever options you prefer. You may do a full or partial install, according to your preferences. We recommend you take the default options for a full install.
  4. When installation is complete, drag the virtual disk image to the trash to eject it.
  5. Back on the ResNet share, double-click the file named 2 Office Updater 1 - Office2008-1210UpdateEN.dmg. A virtual disk will appear on your desktop containing the software installer. Run the installer, taking the default options. This will update Office to version 12.1.0.
  6. When installation is complete, drag the virtual disk image to the trash to eject it.

Repeat this procedure for the remaining Office updates in this folder (Office Updaters 2-5). When you are finished, Office 2008 will be installed and updated to the latest version. You should continue with the steps below to configure Entourage to access your Davidson e-mail account.

  1. Return to the ResNet share, and open the file named 6 Configure Entourage.
  2. Confirm that you wish to run the program. Provide your first name, last name, Davidson college username or machine administrator password as required (read the dialogs carefully to determine what’s being requested).
  3. After setup is finished, Entourage will connect to the Exchange server to begin downloading your mail. You will be asked for your College password. For ease of connection in the future, be sure to check the Save Password box.

Once the password is accepted, Entourage will synchronize its contents to your Davidson e-mail directory. You can also use Entourage to manage contacts, keep your calendar, organize tasks and manage projects.
