Alvarez College Union The student Union, located in the Knobloch Campus Center, includes the information desk, a cafe, small meeting rooms, large programming spaces, the Duke Family Performance Hall, Counseling and Community Service Offices, Career Services Office, and more. Davidson students use the building for socializing, attending lectures and events, and doing homework. Athletic Facilities Even if you are not a member of an organized sport on campus, you are still permitted to use many of the athletic facilities in Baker Sports Complex including the pool, racquetball courts, and workout room. You can ask the information desk in Baker for more details or if you need to borrow equipment. Also, all students can use the exercise equipment in the workout room on the first floor of the Union, which is accessible 24-hours per day by Cat Card. Campus Police The Campus Police Office is located on the first floor of Tomlinson Residence Hall. Davidson's police officers are available 24 hours a day, to ensure campus safety and enforce parking regulations. The Campus Police can be reached at extension 2178 during college business hours. After hours, your call will be forwarded to the Cornelius Police Dispatch. They will call the officer on duty and have him/her contact you. Davidson is considered a very safe community. However, as incidents can happen, be careful and aware of your surroundings at all times. Do not hesitate to call 911 to report a crime or suspicious person or activity. There are emergency telephones distributed across the campus. They have a blue light above the phone. You may use these telephones to contact an officer for any reason. To use these telephones, press the button on the front and talk into the speaker. If you should experience any unpleasant incident, do not hesitate to contact the Campus Police, the Dean of Students Office at extension 2225, or the International Student Advisor’s Office at extension 2010. Community Service Community service is a strong tradition at Davidson College and you are invited to be a part of this exciting program. Davidson College volunteers tutor children, aid refugee families, adopt grandparents, work in soup kitchens, and build homes. The opportunities are endless. You will be able to learn about service options at the Activities Fair during Freshman Orientation and at the Volunteer Fair held once each semester. The office staff, is available to talk with you about how you would like to serve the community. The office is located in the Student Union and the number is extension 2423. Career Services The Office of Career Services provides students with the means to explore career interests and prepare for life after Davidson. This may include graduate school, career-related employment, community service or less traditional pursuits. Career Services works closely with the International Student Office in addressing the unique career planning needs of international students. Examples of collaboration include the development of a career contact database of international alumni, the scheduling of guest speakers to discuss issues of immigration and labor law, and the availability of an on-line database of thousands of employers who have sponsored international employees for H1-B Visa status. Career Services offers several approaches to identify and explore career interests – through personality and interest assessments, one-on-one career counseling and computer-aided tools. You are encouraged to explore these interests through informational interviews with Davidson alumni volunteers, internships and summer jobs. Students have access to an on-line database of over 18,000 internships, summer jobs, community services and research opportunities. Davidson Outdoors Davidson Outdoors is a division of the College Union that offers the college community a variety of activities and trips throughout the year. Davidson students lead the majority of the trips, including kayaking, canoeing, rock climbing, backpacking, caving, whitewater rafting, snow skiing, and mountain biking. On campus, you can build your rock climbing skills on the indoor climbing wall or learn to roll a kayak in the Baker Sports Complex pool. During fall, winter, spring, and Easter breaks, Davidson Outdoors runs longer trips such as backpacking in Pisgah National Forest, sailing off the Florida coast, and canoeing in the Everglades. Davidson Outdoors serves as an excellent resource for trip planning. The office has many trail guides, maps and information on camping locations available to help you plan your own trips. They also rent outdoor equipment for your personal use. Davidson Outdoors offers a Wilderness Leadership Course each fall semester. This course prepares students to lead and instruct groups in outdoor activities, with particular emphasis on minimum impact skills, trip planning, risk management, wilderness first aid, and group dynamics. This course is quite popular and open to all students. Dean of Students Office The Dean of Students Office seeks to help and support students. It coordinates the following student services: tutorial programs, disabled student services, minority student services, academic advisement coordination for first and second year students, student leadership programs, new/transfer student orientation and parents programs, student withdrawals, student publications, and student awards. It is responsible for maintaining community standards through the Honor Code and Code of Responsibility. Religious Life The college chaplain, Rob Spach, is a formally recognized “pastor” or “priest” for Davidson students, although staff members for many other independent religious groups are also available. Davidson College is related to the Presbyterian Church (USA) (a Protestant Christian denomination), and commits itself to openness to and respect for the world’s various religious traditions. Rob Spach therefore works with students from all different religions, not only Christians, and is available to all students for counseling or spiritual direction. On campus, there are religious meetings for students offered by the Roman Catholic, evangelical Christian, Episcopal (Anglican), Methodist and Presbyterian churches in the area, as well as meetings for Jewish, Muslim, and Hindu students not related to any particular church. You should never feel pressured to attend a particular religious group while at Davidson; however, if you ever do feel pressured, talk with the Chaplain or the International Student Advisor so that they can help you address the situation. The Department of Religious Studies offers courses on the history and thought of many of the world’s religions. If you are looking for a place to worship in your faith tradition or need transportation to get there, call Rob Spach at extension 2423. The goal of the Chaplain’s Office is that all students will find ways to grow spiritually while at Davidson.
