Food, Inc. in the 900 Rm! Posted: 11/10/2009 4:13:52 PM
Come watch the acclaimed documentary, Food, Inc. in the 900 Room, this Sunday the 15th at 7:00 PM. Brought to you by the Eco-House and Union Board, Peter Travers of Rolling Stone says, "Don't take another bite till you see Food, Inc., an essential, indelible documentary." In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won't go bad, but we also have new strains of E. coli—the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults. This movie came out earlier this year and has received spectacular reviews. So, come watch it this Sunday, and stick around afterwards to hear about how you can make smart choices about food in Davidson from members of the Eco-House.

Producing a PBS Show Posted: 10/14/2009 10:56:49 AM
Jack Walsh shares his experiences as show runner, segment producer, writer, shooter an editor of This is Atlanta on Friday, October 16 at 8:00 pm in Room 302 of the Alvarez College Union. Beginning as a series of interstitial segments designed to keep viewers' interest during breaks, This Is Atlanta grew into an hour-long arts, culture, and community-interest magazine show. This is Atlanta visits one-of-a-kind locations in the metro area, dives into unusual hobbies, and spotlights some of the city’s most compelling artists. Each segment of the show is a mini-documentary that offers a fascinating look at the people who make Atlanta an exciting place to live. With a fondness for the quirky, under-the-radar cultural offerings of the city and an organic, often humorous, first-person storytelling style, This Is Atlanta has received seven Telly Awards and four regional Emmy nominations. Segments from This Is Atlanta have been featured in the "Best Local Reporting" section of the website for the Newshour with Jim Lehrer and in the online edition of the national music magazine Paste.
