With additional resources, Davidson College will continue to provide the highly personal and challenging environment that has been its hallmark since 1837 and that has positioned it at the forefront of liberal arts education in the United States.
Integral to the college's future, our giving priorities are:
The Davidson Trust: The college's top priority, The Davidson Trust allows talented students of all backgrounds to afford Davidson and to graduate without the burden of debt. It empowers graduates to make career choices based on their passions and not their ability to repay loans.
Davidson Research Initiative: Participation in research is sought--indeed, expected--by today's students. This experience helps them develop critical skills, allows for richer relationships between students and faculty, and expands the depth of knowledge beyond the classroom.
Summer Internships: When faced with economic realities, many students must seek summer employment, regardless of its relevance to their long-term goals. Providing fellowships for students who accept unpaid internships allows students to pursue their interests.
Director of the College Writing Program: Students' ability to express themselves logically and clearly is critical. The director guides faculty development in the teaching of written deliberation, analysis, and argument; regularly assesses first-year writing; and helps departments across the college fashion materials for discipline-specific writing courses.
Golf Scholarship Endowment: Compared with all other Southern Conference schools, Davidson offers 42 percent fewer athletic scholarships, putting the college at a competitive disadvantage. The golf scholarship endowment will allow us to more effectively recruit the best student-athletes to the college. With just 4.5 golf scholarships allowed by NCAA rules, the golf scholarship endowment will stand as a model for building endowments for other athletic teams.
Men's and Women's Basketball Scholarship Endowment: The Davidson basketball program holds a special place in the life and history of our college. Currently, the men's and women's programs are funded entirely from the annual operating budget. A basketball endowment would support the continued prominence of this exemplary athletic program. As the endowment grows, the operating funds currently used for basketball scholarships will be directed to the athletics program for scholarships in other sports.
Campus Art: Permanent art collections and exhibitions have been part of Davidson's culture since 1938, and our efforts continue today. We are currently pursuing the commission and installation of a major outdoor work by Magdalena Abakanowicz.
