The distinguished accomplishments of Davidson's mathematics faculty have been recognized by national and international education and research organizations.  Professors Bivens, Mossinghoff, and Neidinger are recipients of national awards given by the MAA in recognition of superior exposition in an article appearing in one of the Association's journals.  Professor Chartier received an MAA award for teaching by a beginning faculty member.  Professor Davis was awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the Southeastern Section of the MAA.  The work of the department has been supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Simons Foundation, the Associated Colleges of the South, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Department of Energy, the National Security Agency, and the National Science Foundation.  All of the members of the Department of Mathematics are active in the mathematical world at large in ways that enhance their foremost concern, excellence in instruction.
