After hours (at night 9:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. and 24 hours a day during the weekend), an on-call nurse is accessible to students by pager to assess the need for either immediate face-to-face evaluation, regular sick call assessment, or referral to a local emergency room or urgent care facility. Call the Student Health Center at 704-894-2300 to to obtain the pager number.
When calling the pager you will hear a recorded message asking for your "alphanumeric message." This means, at the beep and using the touch tone on your phone, you should carefully enter the telephone number you wish the nurse to use to call you. You will then hear another series of beeps and you may then hang up. Once you do this, please leave the line open to receive the return call. If you get no return call within ten minutes, there was probably a problem with the display of your number; please call and touch tone in your number again. Please note that the pager is not operational during the hours that the health center is open.
There is a nurse on-call during all academic breaks except for the winter and summer breaks. In the summer, nurse on-call services resume at 5 p.m. on Wednesday one week prior to Freshman Orientation. During winter break, nurse on-call services resume at 7:30 a.m. the Saturday before classes begin in January.
If a student has an obvious broken bone or a laceration that would definitely need stitches, they can be referred to a local urgent care or hospital. The nurse on-call can evaluate other orthopedic injuries and offer crutches/ice packs/ace bandages and symptomatic treatment until the student can be evaluated by a Student Health physician. She can also evaluate a student if you are unsure whether or not stitches are needed.
If a student is in any kind of severe distress such as with an acute asthma attack or a severe allergic reaction with respiratory distress and/or throat/tongue swelling, they need to be evaluated at a hospital, likely transported via medic. These two situations can escalate quickly and you should not wait for a nurse return call and arrival on campus. Minor or slow-onset allergic reactions with rashes in the absence of facial/tongue swelling and/or respiratory distress can be referred to the nurse on-call.
