The purpose of evacuation drills is to ensure the sufficient and safe use of available exits, be they stairwells, corridors, or impromptu exits discharging you to safety. Proper drills familiarize occupants to orderly, controlled exiting and help to prevent panic in the event of an actual emergency. Speedy evacuation of buildings, while desirable in primary stages of emergencies, is not in itself the prime objective; rather it is secondary to the preservation of proper order and discipline. At times, exit routes may be blocked by smoke, toxic or super-heated fumes, debris, human threat, or fire. At those times, it is safer to await aid.

Evacuation (For use when conditions outside are safer than inside)

When announcement is made or alarm sounded:

• Take the closest and safest way out (use secondary route if primary route is blocked or hazardous)
• Take roll book so that you can check to be sure everyone has met at designated assembly area 
• Assist those needing special assistance
• Do not stop for to pick up your belongings
• Go to designated assembly area
• Check for injuries
• Take attendance; report discrepancies to emergency response personnel

Wait for further instructions (public address system and/or text message)

**NOTE**

Staff, faculty, and students working in non-primary buildings such as Hamilton House, Glasgow or other similar structures should use the above guidelines and be sure you are at least 200 feet away from the structure to maintain personal safety and first responder access.
