The Religion Department does not have a set sequence through which majors, minors and others are to move through the departmental curriculum. Very few of our courses have prerequisites.

Since they are required of all majors, each academic year we offer:

REL 301, Perspectives in the Study of Religion, in the Spring Semester. In order to enroll in this course students must already have taken or are in the process of taking two courses in Religion.

REL 401, Senior Colloquium, every Fall Semester.

As a way to ensure that Religion majors and minors are able to move through other relevant requirements, each semester we offer:

2-3 courses in biblical studies, broadly defined
5-8 courses in history of religions, religion and culture, religions of the world
5-10 courses in theology and ethics
4-6 courses in religions outside of Christianity.

We do not have a set schedule regarding the availability of particular titles. However, we generally offer each of our courses at least once every four semesters.

With regard to course levels, each semester we usually offer:

2-3 courses at the 100-level
4-8 courses at the 200-level
4-8 courses at the 300-level
2 seminars.

Courses at the 100-level are designed primarily for first and second year students; registration for these courses is generally closed to juniors and seniors until the Drop/Add period. Registration for courses at the 200-level and above is open to all students. Courses at the 300-level generally include more specialized reading material, involve more student research, and require somewhat longer papers than do courses at the 100 or 200-levels. Seminars (which are numbered in the 400s) are designed primarily for majors and minors, although registration is usually open to all students. Seminar topics vary from year to year.
